We would like to thank all of our customers as well as the over 70 vendors that were represented for helping us make our Tech Expo 2004 a great success. We were very happy to see many new faces at this year’s event, both on the customer side as well as the vendor side, attendance was up over 50% and the vendors represented were up over 100% from last year.

As many of you that attended saw, there was no shortage of door prizes, food, or drink. Not to mention all the newest technology that our fast paced industry has to offer. From the self contained electronic white board that 3M was demonstrating, to all the newest in-room control and video distribution from AMX, Crestron & Extron. Dukane was showing off all the newest in nurse call and educational pa systems. There was also no shortage of noise with all the speaker manufacturers, like Sound Tube, Bose & OctaSound. No doubt the hit of the show was the SmartCart that Crest introduced. It features Eiki’s newest video projector, a built-in DVD player, Bose speakers, JVC video equipment, and Samson audio amplification - all wrapped inside of a deep cherry-finished cart that has 3" casters, and a front plexi-glass, locking door. For all of you that were able to make this years show, thank you.

To those who could not make it this year, we hope to see you next year. Tech Expo 2005 promises to be even bigger and better than this year’s. Hope to see you there.

Video Over Twisted Pair Cabling

It's fairly common knowledge that video can now be transmitted over twisted pair cabling such as Cat 5 - typically by using special transmitter/receiver pairs. But did you know that twisted pair products can yield as good, if not BETTER performance than coax? In situations of long cable runs up to 1000' for NTSC Video and 500' for analog RGB signals, twisted pair technology is coming in very handy, and performing beautifully. Of course there are stipulations and limitations to this.

The system must be properly calibrated - a test-generated multiburst pattern (for video) or an alternating pixel pattern (for RGB) should be used as a reference for adjusting gain and sharpness. SKEW must also be accounted for. Basically, SKEW is the propagation difference between the pairs of wires inside the cable. In the networking world, twisted pair cabling is designed with SKEW to reduce crosstalk. But in AV, SKEW can cause misconverged images. Using special 'skew-free' cabling or equipment with internal adjustments can help. All in all though, for cable length issues, twisted pair products are an economical solution without sacrificing quality.
